For small online sellers
Pick the Channel, Price It Right, Ship It Well
Twelve plain guides on Etsy, Amazon and your own Shopify store: what each one takes from a sale, how to price and ship, and how to write listings that follow the rules.
FromSell More ProductsToSmall sellers, everywhere
Most small sellers start on a marketplace, because Etsy and Amazon bring buyers who are already searching. The trade is a share of every sale. A local small business advisor can help with the plan; the numbers behind each channel are in the guides below.
Fees are only part of the cost. Shipping, packaging, returns and your own time decide whether a product earns anything. Before you order stock or packaging in bulk, a trusted local supplier of boxes and mailers can help you choose sizes that keep postage down.

01 Match the channel to the product1 ×
Etsy, Amazon and your own store are built for different buyers. Etsy reported 86.5 million active buyers in 2025, and it wants things you make, design, handpick or source, and its buyers search for personal and custom work: custom or made-to-order items were about 30% of its 2025 sales. Amazon’s shoppers usually search for a specific product and compare price, delivery and reviews, and more than 60% of its sales come from independent sellers. A Shopify store brings no shoppers at all; it rewards sellers who already have an audience. Start with Etsy vs Amazon vs Shopify: Matching the Channel to the Product.
02 Know what every sale costs1 ×
Platform fees are percentages, so they grow with the price. On a $40 item with $6 shipping, Etsy’s standard fees come to $4.82 and Amazon’s to $7.89 on the Individual plan in a 15% category. Add the shipping label, packaging, the occasional return and your own time, and the share you keep can shrink fast. The Payout check below runs the arithmetic for your own numbers, and Pricing Handmade Products: A Formula That Pays You, Covers Fees and Stays Honest shows how to work backward from the margin you need.
03 Ship what you promise1 ×
Shipping is both a cost and a promise. USPS Ground Advantage includes tracking, and boxes over one cubic foot may be charged by dimensional weight, so the smallest box that protects the item is usually the cheapest. Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes are free from USPS and ship anywhere in the country for one price up to 70 pounds, which suits heavy, dense items going far. The FTC’s mail order rule expects a reasonable basis for any shipping time you state, or shipping within 30 days if you state none. Realistic processing times matter most for made-to-order work.
04 Let the listing do the selling1 ×
Online, the photo is the product until it arrives. Etsy recommends listing photos of at least 2000 pixels on each side, and Amazon’s main image must sit on pure white with the product filling 85% of the frame. Amazon titles are capped at 75 characters. Claims need proof: an unqualified “Made in USA” means all or virtually all made in the United States, and a “was” price must be one you really charged for a substantial period.
05 Earn the second sale1 ×
Etsy’s 2025 report shows how much loyal customers matter: habitual buyers were about 7% of active buyers but about 40% of sales. Amazon applies its own return rules to every order, whatever your store policy says, while Etsy lets you set a return policy listing by listing. Handle returns by each channel’s rules, ask every customer for a review the same way, and never suppress negative reviews, which the FTC’s 2024 rule prohibits. Once one channel runs smoothly, a second channel or your own store can follow; Selling on More Than One Channel: Inventory, Policies and Fees Without the Chaos covers the inventory side.

Questions

The questions new sellers ask most, answered from the rules that apply.

1What does Etsy take from a sale?
For a US seller: $0.20 to list, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus shipping, and payment processing of 3% plus $0.25. On a $40 item with $6 shipping that is $4.82, before any Offsite Ads fee. See Marketplace Fees Compared: What Etsy, Amazon and a Shopify Store Take From a $40 Sale.
1What does Amazon take?
A referral fee by category, charged on the total price including shipping: 15% in most categories, with a $0.30 minimum. On top, the Individual plan costs $0.99 per item sold, or the Professional plan $39.99 a month. Category rates are in What Sells Best on Amazon for a Small Seller: Fees, Approval and Products That Fit the Rules.
1Can I resell products I buy wholesale on Etsy?
Not in the handmade category. Etsy requires everything listed to be made, designed, handpicked or sourced by the seller, and it treats listing an item as handmade when you were not involved in making it as reselling. See What Sells Best on Etsy: The Categories, the Buyers and the Rules Behind Them.
1Is a Shopify store cheaper than a marketplace?
The plan fee can be lower than marketplace fees on busy months, but a store brings no shoppers of its own. When we checked in October 2026, Basic was listed at $19 a month billed yearly, with prices shown by country. See When to Start Your Own Shopify Store (and When a Marketplace Is Still Better).
1How long can I take to ship an order?
As long as you say, if you have a reasonable basis for it. Under the FTC’s Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule, if you state no time you must have a reasonable basis to expect to ship within 30 days. Details in Shipping and Packaging for Small Sellers: USPS Services, Box Sizes and the 30-Day Rule.
1Can I ask friends and family for reviews?
You may ask, but the FTC says reviewers with a family or business relationship should disclose it, and incentives may not depend on the review being positive. Check each platform’s own rules too. See Getting Your First Sales Online: A 30-Day Plan for a New Shop.
1How long can an Amazon product title be?
Amazon’s current help page sets the limit at 75 characters including spaces, and a title may not repeat the same word more than twice. Older guides that quote 200 characters are out of date. See Writing Product Listings That Convert: Titles, Descriptions and Claims You Can Back Up.
1When will I get a Form 1099-K?
The IRS says platforms must file one when payments for goods exceed $20,000 across more than 200 transactions, and they may report smaller amounts. All business income is reportable whether or not a form arrives.
